Modular Home Maintenance Tips for Spring

Good home maintenance will help ensure that your modular home stays in good shape for years to come.

Modular home maintenance tips for spring means that you have to take an active part in keeping it up and inspecting it regularly. Spring is a great time to do this. Here are some areas to pay close attention to while doing your spring home prep.

Inspect Your Roof

Your roof is important, so you want to get up there and make sure there aren’t any loose or missing shingles. It is also a good idea to get in the attic and inspect the roof from the inside. Look for signs of water, which would indicate leaks. Anything that seems amiss should be tended to promptly.

Clean your dryer vent and washer machine fill hose

You should check any vents in your home, including your bathroom vent, any attic vents, and range hood. But don’t forget the dryer vent and washing machine fill hose. A clogged vent can cause a fire, not to mention send your electricity bill into orbit. By regularly cleaning and inspecting the vents and hoses for your washer and dryer, you will ensure they are working as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Make sure your fridge and freezer have a good seal

If your fridge or freezer doesn’t seal well, it could mean higher utility bills for you, not to mention spoiled food. Visually inspect the seals for any cracks or gunk. Clean the seals well and replace them if they are damaged. Next, place a dollar bill across the seal, leaving enough of the bill visible so that you can get a firm grip. Close the door and pull the dollar bill out. There should be some resistance. Do this at several points around the door. You can also do this to check the seal on your oven.

Give the walls a good scrub

Walls, baseboards, and outlet covers can become quite dirty, which may not be noticeable because the dirt buildup happens gradually. Use a mild soap and warm water to scrub it all down well. You will be amazed at how much nicer your home looks ― and feels.

Test your smoke alarms

Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide monitors can be lifesaving devices, so you want to make sure they are in top working order. Test them and change the batteries so they can continue protecting your family.

Do a complete de-clutter and reorg

Stuff can be sneaky. It can pile up in cabinets, closets, and dark corners until you realize that clutter is taking over your space. Spring is a great time to go through everything and toss the stuff you don’t use or need. You’ll find your space feels much lighter as a result.

Check your windows and doors for leaks

The seals around windows and doors can become cracked, which can not only impact your indoor temperature but can cause your heating and cooling bills to be way more than they should be. It can also be an access point for household pests like mice, roaches, and ants. A mouse can get through a hole the size of a dime, and other pests can get through impossibly small cracks. Make sure you don’t leave the door open for pests, and seal up your windows and doors.

Spring cleaning can be very cathartic and quite satisfying after a chilly, dark, damp winter. It will get you looking toward sunnier, warmer days and anticipating some fun in the sun, so don’t forget your patio and yard! Hose down your patio furniture, get your grill ready for some summer fun, and prep your flower beds for those pretty spring flowers. Warmer days are on the way!
